برنده نشدن رمان «نهنگ» نوشته چئون میئونگ-کوان در رقابت برای به دست آوردن جایزه بخش بین المللی بوکر انگلیسی خبر بسیار ناراحت کننده‌ای برای کره‌ای‌ها بود. در سوم ماه می، کمیته راهبردی جایزه بوکر کتاب «پناهگاه زمان»، رمانی به قلم نویسنده بلغار، گئورگی گوسپادینوف، را به عنوان یکی از شش فینالیست نهایی جایزه بخش بین الملل بوکر امسال معرفی کرد و رمان «نهنگ» در میان فینالیست‌های نهایی نبود.
این کتاب که در سال ۲۰۰۴ نوشته شده و اخیراً توسط کیم چی-یونگ به زبان انگلیسی ترجمه شده است و توسط انتشارات اروپا ادیشنز در ژانویه ۲۰۲۳ چاپ شد.
این کتاب به خطر روایت طنز و ماجراجویی حماسی‌اش مورد توجه منتقدان قرار گرفت. در این رمان سه کاراکتر منحصر به فرد وجود دارد: چونهوی، یک آجرساز گنگ که با فیل‌ها ارتباط برقرار می‌کند و حرف می‌زند؛ مادر همیشه به دنبال هیجانش، که وقتی برای اولین بار یک نهنگ را دراقیانوس دیده همیشه به دنبال هیجان و رویاپردازی است و یک زن یک چشم که می‌تواند با استفاده از یک سوت زنبور‌های عسل را کنترل کند.
اگرچه «نهنگ» برنده بوکر نشد، اما ارزش ادبی و داستان گویی خلاقانه اش تاثیری باورنکردنی بر خواننده‌ها بر جا می‌گذارد و جایگاه چئون به عنوان یک نویسنده قابل توجه و تحسین شده را بیش از پیش تقویت می‌کند.
علیرغم ترجمه و انتشار آثار ادبی کره‌ای به زبان انگلیسی و زبان‌های دیگر، تنها تعداد کمی از نویسنده‌های کره‌ای در حال حاضر در حلقه‌های ادبی بین المللی شناخته می‌شوند. در حالی که جایزه نوبل ادبیات به بسیاری از نویسنده‌ها و شعرای برجسته اهدا شده است، اما ادبیات کره هنوز نتوانسته است این جایزه را به دست بیاورد.
یکی از دلایلی که نویسنده‌های کره‌ای تاکنون موفق به دریافت جایزه بزرگی مانند جایزه نوبل نشده اند، نبود ترجمه‌های باکیفیت است. در مقابل، نویسنده‌های ژاپنی یا متولد ژاپن مانند یاسوناری کاواباتا، کنزابورو اوئه و کازوئو ایشی گورو در سال‌های ۱۹۶۸، ۱۹۹۴ و ۲۰۱۷ به ترتیب موفق به دریافت این جایزه شده اند.
