مشارکت روزالیند فرانکلین در کشف مارپیچ دوگانه DNA بیشتر از آن چیزی بود که تا حالا فکر می‌کردیم

هفتاد سال پیش در این هفته، خبری منتشر شد مبنی بر اینکه دانشمندان ساختار مارپیچ دوگانه DNA را کشف کرده‌اند، این کشف نشان می‌داد ماده ژنتیکی که تمام حیات را رمزگذاری می‌کند، به شکل دو رشته پیچ خورده است که توسط رشته‌های شیمیایی به هم متصل شده‌اند.

ساختار DNA در سه مقاله پشت سر هم که توسط سه دانشمند که نام‌هایشان حالا بسیار مشهور است، توضیح داده شد.

اما در میان دانشمند محقق، روزالیند فرانکلین شیمی‌دان هم بود که مدت کوتاهی پس از آن بر اثر سرطان تخمدان درگذشت و نقش او نادیده گرفته شد.

در عوض، جیمز واتسون و فرانسیس کریک جایزه نوبل را با موریس ویلکینز، همکار فرانکلین گرفتند، کتاب‌های پرفروش نوشتند و به طور مفصل در مورد اینکه چگونه ساختار DNA را با استفاده از داده‌های گرفته شده از یک تصویر نمادین ، موسوم به عکس ۵۱ کشف کردند، توضیح دادند.

 
 

این عکس پراکنش پرتو‌های ایکس توسط ساختار مولکولی DNA را نشان می‌داد. این عکس که توسط ریموند گاسلینگ، داگرفته شده بود، اما بدون تفسیر متخصص کار یعنی فرانکلین، این عکس نمی‌توانست آنقدر الهام‌بخش کشف DNA باشد. اینکه چشم مجرب فرانکلین تا چه اندازه مسیر کشف را هموار کرده است، از آن زمان تاکنون موضوع بحث بوده است.

اکنون، دو دانشمند که زندگ نامه‌ای درباره واتسون و کریک می‌نویسند، در نامه‌ای نادیده گرفته شده و یک مقاله خبری منتشر نشده از دهه ۱۹۵۰، جزئیات بیشتری را در مورد مشارکت فرانکلین در افشای مارپیچ دوگانه DNA کشف کرده‌اند.

متیو کاب جانورشناس و ناتانیل کامفورت، مورخ پزشکی، در تفسیری به مناسبت سالگرد انتشار مقالات نیچر در سال ۱۹۵۳ می‌نویسند: «این اسناد با هم بیانگر روایت متفاوتی از کشف مارپیچ دوگانه هستند. فرانکلین در حل مسئله ساختار DNA نقش مساوی با دو دانشمند دیگر داشت.

کاب و کامفورت آرشیو یادداشت‌های فرانکلین را بررسی کردند تا ایده‌های او را بازسازی کنند و نشان دهند که چگونه شاگرد سابق ماری کوری بسیار بیشتر از تصویری که اغلب به آن معروف است، می‌دانسته است.

فرانکلین اندازه‌گیری‌های دقیق زیادی از تصاویر پراش اشعه ایکس خود انجام داد و داده‌های خود را در یک گزارش غیررسمی ثبت کرد. هنگامی که یافته‌های او به دست واتسون و کریک راه یافت، از این یافته‌ها- بدون اجازه او – برای تأیید مدل نظری DNA آن‌ها استفاده شد.

فرانکلین به چند دلیل نتوانست خود را بشناساند و به اصطلاح حقش را از جامعه علمی بگیرد. فرانکلین به تنهایی کار می‌کرد و از دنیای مبادلات غیررسمی که واتسون و کریک در آن غوطه‌ور بودند، به دور بود.

فرانکلین بر جمع‌آوری و تجزیه و تحلیل کامل داده‌های پراش اشعه ایکس خود قبل از فرمول‌بندی هر مدلی از نحوه تناسب DNA با یکدیگر اصرار داشت و مقاله او و گاسلینگ در سال ۱۹۵۳ تنها پس از درخواست فرانکلین برای گنجاندن آن در Nature در کنار دو مقاله دیگر منتشر شد.

کاب و کامفورت می‌نویسند: «تصحیح داستان فرانکلین بسیار مهم است، زیرا او الگویی برای زنانی است که وارد علم می‌شوند. او با تبعیض جنسیتی معمول آن زمان روبرو شده بود که برخی از آن‌ها هنوز هم وجود دارند.»
